Diamonds

When looking to buy a diamond, it’s important to understand the different characteristics that give the diamond its value. These characteristics, known as the 4 Cs, are cut clarity, color, and carat.

  • Cut – Describes the finish, proportion, and polish of the diamond. These factors determine the fire and brilliance of a diamond.
  • Clarity – Describes the clearness of a diamond. The fewer flaws inside the diamond, the more valuable the diamond is.
  • Color – The whiter the diamond, the more valuable it is. Diamonds range from white to yellow.
  • Carat – Carat refers to the weight of the diamond.

The price of the diamond is generally based on a combination of these four characteristics.

Gemstone

Gemstones are minerals which, after being cut and polished, are used to make jewelry. They come in a wide range of colors and sizes. Gemstones are categorized as precious and semi-precious stones. Precious stones include rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, while amethyst, jasper, and jade are examples of semi-precious stones.

Gemstones generally get their value based on size, weight, and clarity.

Jewelry

Jewelry is a broad category of decorative wear, although common pieces of jewelry are earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and brooches. The value of jewelry is generally dependent on the material from which it’s made, such as gold or silver, it’s weight, and the precious stones that are part of it.

Watches

The elements that affect a watch’s value are brand name, condition, age, and how well it runs. Having original packaging can add value as well.
